Cloud providers and their consumers know that the secret sauce for an effective cloud solution combines superior IT performance with meaningful cost savings. A key ingredient of the performance piece is the reliability offered by the chosen cloud environment. While consumers’ growing expectation for bullet-proof reliability is driving many cloud providers to make improvements, Amazon Web Services (AWS) continues to lead the pack in the public cloud sector. Industry experts recognize that “[i]n the case of public cloud computing, Amazon Web Services clearly is the most mature offering on the market in terms of functionality, cost, and most importantly, reliability.”
Mike Wheatly’s recent article for Silicon Angle supports this idea and identifies two separate bases for his conclusion that AWS is the most reliable of the big public cloud players, including Google and Microsoft. One of the studies Wheatly discusses, conducted by CloudEndure, shows that AWS increased its reliability by a staggering 488% in 2014 alone and, in fact, experienced no major outages during the year. As Marc Crespi of OneCloud recently opined, “[c]learly for near-term public cloud computing uses, AWS should be at the top of the list for consideration.”
